Wolf Range Hood Repair

Wolf Range Hood F6 Code: What It Means and How to Clear It

An F6 on a Wolf range hood is almost always FG, the black V Series display's reminder that the mesh filters need cleaning. Wash the filters, refit them, then hold DELAY until FF shows to clear it.

5 min read

Three screwdrivers, a long shaft driver, slip-joint pliers and a wire brush spread on a cloth beside hinge brackets, washers and screws

If your Wolf hood seems to be showing F6, look at it again: on the black V Series display the message is FG, and the rounded G reads very much like a 6. It means the mesh grease filters are due for a wash, nothing worse. Take the filters out, clean them, let them dry, put them back, then press and hold the DELAY button until the display reads FF. That clears it. No part has failed, and you do not need a service visit for this one.

It is still worth doing promptly. A hood breathing through greasy mesh moves less smoke and steam, and in older Concord houses, where the hood was often fitted during a later renovation, the duct tends to take a long route through walls or an attic before it reaches outside, so there is little airflow to spare.

Why a filter reminder looks like an F6

Small segmented displays build letters from the same short bars they use for numbers, and a G drawn that way is only one stroke away from a 6. That is why so many owners go looking for an F6 fault that Wolf never lists. If you are searching your use-and-care booklet for F6, look under FG instead.

FG is a housekeeping prompt. Wolf recommends cleaning the mesh filters on these hoods every month, and more often when grease is heavy in the air, such as frequent frying, searing or wok cooking over high heat. A household that stir-fries several nights a week should expect to see FG sooner than one that mostly bakes and simmers.

Clearing FG, step by step

  1. Switch the fan and lights off and give the hood a few minutes to cool if you have just finished cooking.
  2. Release the mesh filters from the underside of the hood and lift them out level, because the bottom edge holds the most grease.
  3. Soak them in hot water with a degreasing dish soap and brush gently with a soft brush. Check your model’s guide before loading mesh filters into a dishwasher.
  4. Let them dry completely, then seat them back until they sit flush.
  5. Press and hold DELAY until FF appears. FF is the confirmation that the reminder is reset.

If FF does not come up, let go and try again with a steady press held a little longer. If the display ignores DELAY entirely, or the touch controls stop responding, the issue is in the control and not the filters.

FC surprises people because it cannot be switched off, and it appears even on hoods that are ducted outdoors and have no recirculation filters in them at all. On a ducted hood, simply clear it with the same DELAY hold whenever it shows. Running without ductwork is limited to the 30” and 36” pro wall models whose built-in blower is rated at 600 CFM or below, and even then a recirculation kit has to be fitted.

Matching the filter to your hood

Before ordering anything, read the model number on the hood’s rating label. The prefix tells you the family: VW is a cooktop wall hood, VI a cooktop island hood, DD a downdraft, PW a pro wall hood, PWC a pro wall chimney hood, PI a pro island hood and PL a pro hood liner.

  • The CTWH30 cooktop wall hood holds two 816396 mesh filters measuring 10-1/2” x 14”.
  • The black glass VW30B and VW36B take mesh filter 825544.
  • Pro island hoods such as the I363418 carry six 811180 baffle filters, and pro liners such as the L342212 use 816311 baffle filters at 13-1/2” x 12-7/8”.

Baffle filters on Wolf pro hoods, along with their spacers and grease cups, want cleaning every 3-6 months, and all of them can go through the dishwasher. Never run any Wolf hood with its filters out, even for a quick boil. On a brand-new pro hood, the baffle filters arrive installed inside it, and the blue or white protective film and white foam packing should come off during installation.

When clean filters do not fix the airflow

Sometimes FG clears, FF shows, and smoke still drifts past the hood. That points to the air path rather than the display. Pro wall hoods are designed for a 10” round rigid metal duct, and once the run is longer than 50’ (15 m) a higher CFM blower may be needed to keep up. Every pro wall hood has a backdraft damper, and a damper stuck partly shut will choke the flow. Local codes may also call for an additional backdraft or make-up air damper, and Wolf suggests asking a local HVAC professional about that part. Our walkthrough of Wolf hood extraction problems goes through the airflow checks in order.

When to call a technician

Call for an 88, for controls that ignore every press, for a fan that hums without turning, or for a reminder that will not clear no matter how long you hold DELAY. Wolf Repair Concord is an independent shop that handles Wolf range hood repair in Concord Center, West Concord, Nine Acre Corner and Conantum.

The first visit is billed as a $95 service call; it covers coming out and diagnosing the hood fully, and the same $95 comes off your repair bill once you approve the work. Should the diagnosis land on a control board or touch panel, expect a typical range of $520–$1,670, with the exact quote following diagnosis and coming before any part is ordered. To book, call (401) 373-4040.

Still asked on the phone

How do I reset the F6 code on a Wolf range hood?
Clean the mesh filters, put them back, then press and hold DELAY until FF appears on the display. The code is really FG, the filter-cleaning prompt, and FF is the hood confirming the reset. If FF never comes up, or DELAY does nothing at all, the control itself needs a technician.
How do I hard reset a Wolf vent hood?
Turn off the circuit breaker that feeds the hood, wait a minute or two, then switch it back on. That restarts a control that has frozen, but filter prompts are still cleared with the DELAY hold. If the display shows 88, skip the resets and book a technician.
How often should I clean Wolf hood filters?
Clean the mesh filters on a black V Series hood about once a month, and sooner if you fry often or cook with a wok. On Wolf pro hoods, wash the baffle filters, spacers and grease cups every 3-6 months; they are safe to put in the dishwasher.
Can I turn off the FC reminder on a ducted Wolf hood?
No, the FC reminder cannot be disabled. It appears after about 100 hours of fan use and shows up even on hoods that have no recirculation filters fitted. On a ducted hood, hold DELAY until FF appears and carry on cooking.
What does 88 mean on a Wolf hood?
An 88 on a Wolf V Series hood display needs a technician, because Wolf gives owners no troubleshooting steps for it. It is not a maintenance prompt like FG or FC, so repeated resets will not deal with whatever caused it.

What these repairs come to

Flat $95 service call covering the visit and full diagnosis, credited against the repair once you approve it.

Parts and labour together

Job Typical total
Igniter or spark module replacement $270 – $670
Burner valve or orifice service $240 – $1,050
Oven thermostat or sensor calibration $140 – $710
Convection fan or motor $320 – $880
Control board or touch panel $520 – $1,670
Door hinge, glass or seal $210 – $900

A band is what the job usually falls between, not a quote. What you are given before anything is opened is one number, and it does not move afterwards without a conversation.

A comparable new unit

$6,510 – $17,780

Appliance only. Put a repair band beside that figure before deciding — on this equipment the cabinetry and the gas work usually settle the argument long before the part price does.

Where those replacement figures come from

A comparable pro range, appliance only — before delivery, installation, gas or electrical work and any cabinetry. A rangetop plus separate wall ovens lands differently again.

What decides where inside a band a job lands

  1. Which component failed

A spark module, a convection motor and a control board are three different jobs. Naming a price before the fault is found is naming it at random.

  2. Whether the part is current

Parts for current platforms are ordinary. Older units sometimes need a superseded number sourced, which moves both the price and the timeline.

  3. How the unit is installed

A range that slides out onto a tiled floor and one wedged into a rear-ell cutout with an inch each side are not the same labour, whatever is wrong inside.

  4. What else is close to going

If a second component is visibly near the end, you hear about it while the appliance is open rather than on a second visit.
